SLAPTON, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

Taken from documentation written at the time, this novel - set between 1988 and 1993 -, revolves around one woman’s struggle against poltergeist activity, demonic possession and ultimate Exorcism at her home in a small Buckinghamshire village.

It is unknown how the demonic spirit came to be at the cottage, but its presence resulted in a battle ensuing between God and Satan as they waged war for souls. Finding herself caught in the middle and desperate for salvation from the evil spirit and ghosts which resided with her, Joanna turned to the Church for help, only to discover that the Exorcist appointed for the task would be less than accommodating.

Trinities feature strongly in this novel. Three clergy members were directly involved with this case; two willing to help, but unable to do so due to Church doctrine and protocol, whilst the third who was able to help, was unwilling to do so. The next triangle is with the three main characters in the book; Paul, Lewis and Joanna that were all involuntarily drawn into the ‘war for souls’. There were three spirits in the house; one earth bound (Jesse Healy), one demonic and one of the light. But ultimately, the most powerfully terrifying trinity was; God, Satan and Joanna. A triangle that nearly cost Paul his life!

To the sceptics, this book may be nothing more than fictitious religious rhetoric, whilst for others it may be construed that having true Faith in God can exist outside the confines of a religion. But whatever conclusion the reader may draw on the religious aspects of this book, the main focus should be on Joanna’s journey which is one that demonstrates both great courage and her ultimate trust in the colliding worlds that make up our theology of the Divine.
